Thoughtful Library Design
– The Chronicle: Wired Campus Blog

As they renovate old libraries and plan new ones, colleges consider the purpose of the buildings — and how to make them popular.

Thoughtful Design Keeps New Libraries Relevant
Not everything students want and need is online

– reported by The Chronicle of Higher Education

But now librarians increasingly find that administrators, professors, and students see the library building as essential, a romanticized heart of the campus. At the same time, though, libraries have changed radically from the stodgy and stuffy repositories of years past. Some people wonder whether libraries have loosened up too much, and what libraries will look like in the future.

art in the Library

Seattle Public Library’s new art installation combines beautiful electronic images with what people are checking out of the library. Artist George Legrady created a piece that notes what is being checked out (not by whom), delays the stream by one hour (for obvious real-time privacy issues), and displays the results in color-coded streams on six huge plasma screens.

ALA Creates ‘Adopt a Library’ Program to assist Gulf region libraries recover and rebuild

While cleanup efforts begin in Louisiana and Mississippi, the American Library Association (ALA) continues its mission to lend support to devastated libraries in the Gulf Coast region. The ALA’s Chapter Relations Office has established an “Adopt a Library” program to provide assistance to libraries damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

The program will provide an opportunity for U.S. libraries of all types to adopt a library in the Gulf Coast. The ALA will collect information from libraries that need assistance, and will connect those libraries with others that can provide relief. Contributing libraries are asked to lend support in the way of books, computers, fundraising and volunteers.

Libraries interested in adopting a library may visit ALA’s Chapter Relations Office Web site at www.ala.org/katrina/adopt and complete a participation form.
