The New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Public Library, and the Queens Borough Public Library recently launched a Web site to help New York City school children with their homework, research, and studies: homeworkNYC.org.
Created in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education, homeworkNYC.org offers links to helpful library resources, such as databases from EBSCO, the New York Times, and Encyclopedia Britannica on subjects ranging from math and science to history and mythology.

From LibrarianInBlack:
Intro to digital rights management for librarians
Mike Godwin from the Office of Information and Technology Privacy has written a 44-page primer to Digital Rights Management for librarians. As we know from recent Sony incidents, DRM affects the items we lend out, our ability to archive items, and our patron’s abiilty to use the darn things on their devices. If you’re the person at your library responsible for digital copyright or technical services, this is mandatory reading. But…this is not just for techies–it’s for any librarian who orders (or helps patrons with) DVDs, CDs, databases, eBooks, or any other item that may have DRM embedded in it.

Reported by the Times Online, “If you thought you worked under pressure, you should spare a thought for those poor librarians.”
Librarians complained that there was not enough variety in their work, that they did not have enough control over their careers, and they were not allowed to put their skills to full use.
The lack of job satisfaction meant they were more likely than other professions to be absent from work, or to vent their frustration on their families when they got home.
By comparison, members of the emergency services were happier and more relaxed at work despite often finding themselves embroiled in dangerous or emotional situations.

dave’s blog has David King’s upcoming speaking engagement list. I like this idea for getting some promotion for a “celebrity” staff member. I also like the topics covered.

The American Library Association has launched a KIDS! @ your library® to help libraries market their services to young readers.
Special thanks to Library Marketing for pointing me to this.
ALSC’s @ your library® initiative will provide promotion tips, sample press materials, downloadable art, and other tools to help local libraries reach out to kids, their parents and caregivers.
Our goal…all school age children will use their public library! Parents will know that taking their kids to the library is one of the best and most important things they can do for their children.
Some things that will help:
Kids! @ your library® is being developed by children’s librarians for children’s librarians. Stay tuned to this Web page for more resources as they develop. In the months to come, we will be posting a Tip Sheet, a downloadable campaign song created just for us by Grammy-nominated singer and storyteller Bill Harley!, and a tool kit, including sample press materials, strategies for promoting your services to children and their families, and examples of exciting programs and stellar Web sites.
